Zoysia grass is a warm season grass that grows best during the summer months.

Zoysia grass is a warm season grass that grows best during the summer months. But when it’s actively growing, it needs to be fertilized. Fertilize your Zoysia lawn in early spring (March) with a slow release fertilizer. Keep feeding it until midsummer (June-July). A soil test will determine pH and nutrient needs of your grass. If you’re soil pH is below 5.5, add lime to increase pH levels. Apply pre-emergent herbicide as necessary in the spring (March) to prevent weed growth from germination of weed seeds over the summer months. Avoid applying pre-emergent herbicides during mid-summer because they can prevent Zoysia grass seed from germinating and taking root in newly seeded areas of your yard.

Keep Zoysia grass at a height of 1 to 2 inches for lawn areas, and 3 2 inches for golf courses and sport fields.

  • Mowing
  • When mowing your Zoysia lawn, you should:
  • mow at least once a week. Mowing helps keep the grass healthy and growing
  • change the frequency of mowing to match how fast the grass is growing. In some cases, this may mean every three days, while in other situations it can be two weeks between mows. If you’re not sure how often you need to mow, check with your local university extension office or a landscaping professional.
  • always cut off no more than 1/3 of the leaf blade length when mowing. For example, if your leaf blades are 3 inches long, never cut them shorter than 2 inches long. Cutting off any longer will prevent your grass from photosynthesizing properly and can lead to dead patches later on in life

You can control most pests with insecticides and fungicides.

The first time we moved into our house, we were overwhelmed. We had no idea about the kinds of pests that could be a problem for us in our new home. Knowing what to do can go a long way to keeping your property from being ruined by pests. Pests have the ability to ruin your home and belongings so you need to take control and make sure they don’t get a chance of ruining your home or possessions.

There are two basic types of pests: insects and weeds. Both can cause damage, but they are not the biggest pests in your yard. The biggest ones are usually rodents like mice, rats or squirrels. If you see any activity around your house or yard during the day, assume that it is one of these rodents because they will usually come out at night when it is cooler and there is less light or noise coming from inside the house. Also all signs that you might see at night like droppings on your porch railing or on a wall near an outside storage shed, should be taken with more caution since it could be a rat instead of just mice since mice would leave their droppings in wooded areas away from people’s homes now days as well as not making them climb up on a wall near an outside storage shed unless something was bothering them specifically at that moment (like children playing around).

Another big pest is termites which will eat through wood furniture if left unchecked without being treated for it which is why wood furniture needs to be protected whenever possible with using insecticides before termites have chance to eat through it and destroy it completely before needing replacement due to severe damage. This does not always mean having it professionally done however because some people want to save money because there are many ways to prevent things like this happening rather than having them done professionally later when this happens or if they already did happen even after professional repair has been done by getting rid off everything they can salvage and even then maybe hiring someone who specializes in replacing damaged items with replicas made out

Mowing zoysiagrass at 1 to 2 inches with a sharp mower blade is recommended for established stands.

Zoysia grass should be mowed at 1 to 2 inches for established stands. How often zoysiagrass needs mowing depends on the type of zoysiagrass and the season. It is important to keep a sharp blade on the mower because dull blades can shred and damage zoysia grass leaves. If you have a fine-textured variety, it may require more frequent mowing than a coarse-textured variety.

It is difficult to generalize about how many times per year different varieties of zoysia grass need mowing due to regional differences in climate and other growing conditions. However, if it is allowed to grow too tall, use a rotary mower set at its highest level and make several passes across the lawn to gradually lower its height before cutting it back down to normal height.

Mow when the grass has reached 3 – 4 inches in height, which generally occurs every 5 – 10 days during peak growing season (when daytime temperatures average 80 degrees F or higher), every 10 – 14 days during summer (when daytime temperatures average 70 – 80 degrees F), and once per month during spring dormancy (when daytime temperatures average 60 – 70 degrees F).

Growing zoysia grass

  • It has an excellent tolerance to heat and drought once established.
  • It has good shade tolerance.
  • It tolerates salt.
  • It can be grown in a wide range of soils including acid ones, some alkaline soils and heavy clay ones (if drainage is improved).
  • Zoysia is a slow grower, so do not expect quick results.
